Brief Guidances

Encountering Obstacles Is a Sign That We Are Advancing on the Path to Victory

Words of Encouragement From Ikeda Sensei

If you propagate [this teaching], devils will arise without fail. If they did not, there would be no way of knowing that this is the correct teaching.

“Letter to the Brothers,” The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, vol. 1, p. 501

These words are an important guide for all followers of Nichiren Daishonin. Devilish functions will arise precisely because one practices the correct teaching of Buddhism.

The Ikegami brothers, the recipients of this guidance, overcame the hardship of the elder brother, Munenaka, being disowned by their father twice. Continuous difficulties, such as the recurrence of illness, are trials we undergo in order to attain a state of absolute happiness, a state in which magnificent hope-filled vistas stretches endlessly before us.

Encountering obstacles is a sign that we can definitely achieve victory in the future despite all odds. With this firm conviction, let’s cheerfully persevere upholding “faith for overcoming obstacles” and “faith for absolute victory”!

Translated from the November 7, 2020 Seikyo Shimbun, the Soka Gakkai’s daily newspaper.
