The Buddha dwells within our hearts. For example, flint has the potential to produce fire, and gems have intrinsic value.
“New Year’s Gosho,” The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, vol. 1, p. 1137
Nichiren Daishonin encourages us at the start of a new year to spread happiness from our hearts.
Our Buddhist practice and Soka Gakkai activities enable us to draw forth our own and others’ Buddha nature, just as striking flint produces fire and polishing a rough gem creates a sparkling jewel.
Chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is a victory song, a jubilant celebration of our lives. Let us dance the joyful dance of life and kosen-rufu each day with a spirit as fresh and hope filled as the sunrise on New Year’s Day! Let us perform a grand and triumphant drama of positive transformation based on the Buddhist principle of three thousand realms in a single moment of life and “gather fortune from ten thousand miles away” (WND-1, 1137).
From the Jan. 6, 2023, issue of the Soka Gakkai’s daily newspaper, Seikyo Shimbun.
