Located at the southwestern part of South Africa, the Cape Floral region is regarded as one of the six Floral Kingdoms of the world and one of the great centers of terrestrial biodiversity. The property, consisting of various national parks and nature reserves, is home to a diverse and dense population of some 9,000 plant species, 69% of which are endemic—species found only in a limited area and are often more vulnerable to extinction. It contains examples of significant ongoing ecological, biological and evolutionary processes, such as the ability of plants to adapt to natural disturbances, as well as the cycles of plant pollination. With its treasure trove of unique wildlife, efforts are being made to protect it from invasive species, fires and development pressures caused by a growing population.
