ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.—On July 14, 2024, to commemorate the anniversary of the first detonation of an atomic weapon in 1945 at the Trinity Test Site, an interfaith coalition hosted a vigil to pray, reflect and discuss the impact of the Trinity Test on its surrounding communities within a 50-mile radius. Speakers included John C. Wester, archbishop of Santa Fe, who believes in the need to rejuvenate a sustained, serious conversation about universal, verifiable nuclear disarmament; Ira Helfand, member of the International Steering Group for the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons; as well as SGI-USA representatives and advocates from various fields. The collaborative effort provides education and opportunities for civic action, while deepening friendship and trust between SGI and leading voices in the nuclear abolition space.
