Founded in 1350, the Historic City of Ayutthaya was the second capital of the Kingdom of Siam. Between the 14th and 18th centuries, the city flourished as one of the world’s largest and most cosmopolitan urban areas and center of commerce. In 1767, the Burmese army attacked the city and burned it to the ground. Today, the archaeological ruin consists of tall reliquary towers and Buddhist monasteries that were elegantly decorated with the highest quality of crafts and mural paintings.
